Our Gridtern Program allows current college students to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on June 5th 2023 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, and opportunities to get involved in your community and have fun!

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2023:

Customer Energy Integration (Waltham, MA)

The Customer Energy Integration team works directly with DG developers to interconnect large scale solar and energy storage projects. For the summer you will assist the team with different process improvement and data migration efforts to ensure a positive customer management experience.

Distribution Planning and Asset Management MA (North Andover, MA)

Our Distribution Planning and Asset Management team strives to maintain reliable, sustainable, and affordable electric system for our customers. The team works to identify modifications to distribution line and station facilities that will enhance the resiliency of the system and to modernize the grid to meet forecasted capacity requirements and minimizes environmental concerns. For the summer you will work with the team to perform different planning and grid modernization activities such as annual capacity planning, asset condition, capacity, and safety analysis as well as voltage/loading/power quality issue analysis.

Evaluation, Measurement & Verification (Waltham, MA)

Our Evaluation, Measurement & Verification (EM&V) team supports National Grid's award-winning energy efficiency programs and clean energy technologies by quantifying and tracking the energy savings and other impacts of the programs. For the summer you will help support the development of a new data management system that will include program participation data, energy efficiency measure data, savings data, cost data, and more.

Future of Heat (Waltham, MA)

Our Future of Heat team is responsible for the strategy activation of National Grid's Fossil Free Future. The team coordinates with other areas of the company to ensure that we are moving in the right direction, anticipating the needs of our customers, reducing the cost of energy delivery, and pioneering the flexible energy systems of tomorrow. For the summer you will assist the team on different clean energy projects and will oversee a project to research solutions that can align with our company’s Fossil Free Vision.

Gas Resource Planning (Waltham, MA)

Our Gas Resource Planning team creates a construction and maintenance work plan based on our company targets and adherence to compliance goals with our regulators. Additionally, the team engages stakeholders to drive our capital portfolio by identifying any gaps or trends that pose a risk for completion of our work plan. For the summer you will support the team in updating, maintaining, and improving reports, as well as assist with process improvement efforts the team leads.

Gas Transmission Engineering/Pressure Regulation (Waltham, MA)

Our Gas Transmission Engineering/Pressure Regulation team develops risk-based programs to replace and enhance our pressure regulating facilities. The team also creates projects to achieve the company’s goal of achieving inline inspection on all our pipelines. For the summer you will perform evaluations on the gas transmission system which include integrity assessments, risk management, data collection and analysis.

LNG Operations- Compliance & Training (Waltham, MA)

Our LNG Operations team is responsible for our LNG facilities which provide support to our gas distribution system during high gas demand. Specifically, the Compliance & Training group (C&T) ensures a high level of regulatory and company policy compliance through use of internal audits/inspections, risk analysis, and standardization across the enterprise. For the summer you will assist the team in collecting information on the methods used by our plants to perform certain maintenance procedures. You will also assist with reviewing inspection findings that came about from previous plant inspections.

LNG Operations- Mass North (Tewksbury, MA)

Our Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Operations team is responsible for overseeing the local gas distribution system to ensure natural gas is available, especially on the coldest days, to our customers. The team ensures we maintain and operate equipment safely, reliably, and efficiently. For the summer you will assist department engineers with reviewing new capital projects. You will also assist in monitoring the new work management system to ensure it is operating correctly.

Options Solutions Engineering (Waltham, MA)

Our Options Solutions Engineering team is at the forefront of the electrification and green energy transition, developing scope and analyzing options for transmission and distribution capital projects to execute them efficiently. For the summer you will be assisting with team engineers on current department projects. You will have the ability to learn more about our electric system and how its operated.

Resource Coordination (West Roxbury, MA)

Our Resource Coordination team is responsible for the daily scheduling of gas operations employees & contractors.  Along with overseeing the field workers workload, the team ensures that work is scheduled timely to remain compliant and hit the company’s regulatory & financial targets. For the summer you will assist the team in the creation and management of databases. You will review system data to ensure accuracy and oversee different reporting requests.

SHE Process Safety (Waltham, MA)

Our Safety, Health, Environmental (SHE) Process Safety team provides support to businesses to meet the company defined risk threshold. The team will perform risk assessments and implement any process safety management system. For the summer you will conduct studies on over pressure scenarios with relief valves that are stacked in public areas. You will also work with the team to research engineering best practices for installing LNG dike ground improvement methodologies and tank re-enforcement methodologies.

Transmission Asset Management NE (Waltham, MA)

Our Transmission Asset Management team is responsible for developing strategies and refurbishment projects to improve reliability and optimize the return on investment from the assets related to electrical transmission. This includes nearly 2,900 miles of transmission lines as well as 165 transmission substations. For the summer you will work on capital replacement projects and be responsible for reviewing the asset conditions of line and substation assets.

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 5, 2023
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2023 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Engineering or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$21.00 - $25.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$32.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year.
