Our Gridtern Program allows current college students to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on June 5th 2023 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, and opportunities to get involved in your community and have fun!

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2023:

Colleague Communication & Engagement (Waltham, MA)

Our Colleague Communication & Engagement Team helps to tell the story of how we are delivering for customers and enabling a clean energy future. The team manages internal communication channels and engages with employees to share successes that showcase the important work that the company is doing. For the summer you will conduct several photography sessions in our field locations and also assist with video creation and digital design to help the team tell their story.

Customer Gas Connections (Waltham, MA)

Our Customer Gas Connections team oversees commercial and residential customer information and requests received for gas installation. For the summer you will assist the team in collecting data and reports to ensure alignment around company priorities and objectives. You will also work to develop safety metrics to identify areas of improvement.  

EE Procurement (Waltham, MA)

Our EE Procurement team looks to maximize value for our customers by providing strategic sourcing solutions that appropriately balance customer satisfaction, quality, and cost effectiveness. This team supports both our New York and Massachusetts procurement needs. For the summer you will support the team with their day-to-day functions as you learn from subject matter experts in the procurement field. Specific summer projects will be shared during the interview process.

NE DEI Workforce Strategy (Waltham, MA)

Our NE DEI Workforce Strategy team helps to support the company’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) efforts to have a pipeline of diverse talent reflecting the communities we serve. For the summer you will assist with the development and design of the DEI Workforce Development Strategy. This will include drafting communications for both internal and external stakeholders as well as helping with the implementation of our multi-year road map of building a pipeline of diverse talent.

NE Regulatory (Waltham, MA)

Our New England (NE) Regulatory team coordinates all the regulatory filings/activities for National Grid’s New England business. This upcoming summer, the team will be preparing to file an electric rate case, which is used to determine customer base rates for the electric service they receive. For the summer you will be supporting the team with rate case preparations. This will entail drafting communications that will be used to obtain data and organizing the information received.

NE Transformation Change (Waltham, MA)

Our New England (NE) Transformation Change team drives change enablement towards the realization of National Grid’s goals to deliver efficient, reliable, and affordable clean energy for our customers. The team does this by providing strategic guidance and change delivery support across the NE Transformation portfolio. Summer projects and activities will include providing digital product change support, data collection and reporting, creation of internal communications, and develop/facilitate team meetings.

New England Safety, Health and Assurance (Brockton, MA)

Our New England Safety, Health and Assurance team is responsible for conducting medical examinations and consultative services for our union employees. These examinations consist of pre-employment examinations, fitness for duty following an injury, and DOT medical clearance. For the summer you will assist the Nurse Practitioner with daily team tasks as well as work on office compliance.

New England Transformation Office, Future of Electric (Waltham, MA)

Our New England Transformation Office, Future of Electric team is responsible for developing and owning the clean energy transformation roadmap, including ensuring alignment and accountability for delivery of our clean electricity vision. For the summer you will work with the team to improve our tracking systems and processes for managing the change occurring within the electric side of our business.

New England Transformation Planning (Waltham, MA)

Our business will be going through a massive transformation over the next decade. The Transformation Planning team supports and enables this transformation by building, measuring, and driving progress against plans. We operate between the strategic and operations teams to help business units maintain focus on long-term goals without reducing their day-to-day functions. For the summer you will work with business leaders to understand dependencies within transformation plans and track performance against these plans.

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 5, 2023
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2023 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Business, Management, Communications, Economics, Human Resources, Digital Arts, Photography, Nursing or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$17.00 - $23.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$26.00 - $31.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year.
