National Grid is hiring a Senior Transmission Modeling Analyst for our Asset Development Department, in Waltham MA.

Job Purpose
  • Senior Transmission Modeling Analysts  develop models, simulations, and advanced analytics of power systems and wholesale electricity markets.
  • The Senior Transmission Modeling Analysts will be responsible for working with the Asset Development team to create data models and simulations necessary for proper vetting and evaluation of power system technology deployments, policy impacts, and assessment of wholesale electricity market (locational marginal pricing, LMP and capacity markets) impacts. The analyst will be directly responsible for creating optimization models for individual projects, including energy storage and power flow technologies
  • The position will be responsible for working with the Engineering team to create thermal, voltage and transient stability data inputs (power flow base case models) for wholesale electricity markets and economic assessments needed to analyze and evaluate new technologies on our transmission network and advance policies to support our transmission tariffs and benefits for customers of technology deployment and transmission policy.
  • The position collaborates directly with our Transmission Engineers, Intelligent Transmission Network Program Lead, and Transmission Policy Analysts to support business case analysis for advancing new grid facing technologies, design and building models that support evaluation of value, benefit cost analysis, and business case, analyzing wholesale electricity markets impacts, evaluation of policy and tariffs, and sizing of customer value.
  • With the changing nature of electric transmission networks, the role will include examining probabilistic methods and scenario planning of the impacts on facilitation the integration of renewables, power flow control technologies, ultrafast charging EV transmission impacts, power generation modeling, and impacts to the ISO New England and New York ISO wholesale electricity markets.
Key Accountabilities
  • Develop quantitative methods, analyses and tools that support senior management in selecting new technologies and advancing policies that will support our capital investment strategy and enhance customer value.
  • Produce high level and detailed models, such as simulation/optimization models of the power systems in New England and New York (and adjacent markets) and other advanced analytical systems, such as energy storage system optimization and power flow analytics
  • Promote and implement procedural best practices, including processes for data management, model and data quality and verification
  • Represent National Grid with policymakers, ISOs, and regulators to explain business case analysis and impacts on customers and investments decisions
  • Develop and maintain internal US transmission network scenarios. Collaborate as necessary across the business (and as appropriate in compliance with FERC Standards of Conduct) to ensure links with customer data analytics, load forecasts, transmission and distribution planning studies.
  • Plan and deliver critical analysis to support projects through investment decisions, to identify and develop new business opportunities, inform policy positions, and support business planning.
  • Scope, develop and implement analysis with internal stakeholders, including sensitivity cases and exogenous analysis.
  • Work alongside and in coordination with Asset Development teams, including Technology Deployment, Asset Strategy and Transmission Policy, and Intelligent Transmission Network program lead
  • Prepare, articulate and explain model outputs and insights in a form suitable for executives.
  • Wide breadth and depth of knowledge of US electricity, power and gas industry structures, policies, regulations and market fundamentals. Knowledge of trends in industry.
Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering  Bachelors' degree and 5+ years of experience OR Ph.D in engineering, mathematics, or applied computer science and 5+ years of experience
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience working independently on multiple simultaneous initiatives
  • Advanced quantitative analysis and modeling, relational databases, SQL, non-SQL database systems, Aspen, C++, Matlab, Python and cloud based high performing computing (team uses PLEXOS production simulation modeling)
  • Able to handle both quantitative and qualitative data to infer analytic insight and complement the quality of analyses
  • Experience with ISO or consulting working in power and electricity markets and transmission system planning preferred
  • Preferred knowledge of power and/or electrical systems modeling and tools, experience with ISO or consulting working in power and electricity markets and transmission system planning
  • Preferred PTI Software (PSSE, SCED) PowerGEM-TARA or Simulator
  • Preferred knowledge of cloud-based production cost modeling (team uses PLEXOS)
  • Preferred advanced data and market modelling capability, including experience with commercial production cost modeling software. Tools used include: PLEXOS, energy storage optimization software, PSSE, CYME,  Aspen, C\+\+, Matlab, Python, R, Scala, SQL, VBA
