Job Purpose

As a Senior Engineering Director, you will be responsible for the platform product development process for your product line or business unit, working closely with your management team, product leaders, cloud engineering, security engineering, Enterprise Architecture, and key stakeholders across the organization to create a high performing team and build the best platform products for your customer. You will actively contribute to the success of the team by guiding your engineering managers to ideal processes and support infrastructure for their teams, participating in architectural discussions, and working closely with your engineering leadership to establish standards and practices to ensure high-quality product delivery. The Senior Engineering Director will have leadership duties for Engineering Managers and will be responsible for Engineering direction and ownership for 1 or 2 product lines.  They will have direct reporting responsibilities for any members of the squad that are not reporting to engineering managers, likely being Principal Engineers who aren't attached to a particular squad on a long-term basis.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develops and implements digital platforms vision and operating model; sets direction based on alignment to business strategy and technology opportunities
  • Implements IT technology strategy and set the direction for our platform products organization; partners with IT & business stakeholders and influences overall platform strategy
  • Fosters customer centric culture and outcome driven engineering environment
  • Works with engineering colleagues across NG to understand and influence company-wide technologies and frameworks
  • Provides support for senior engineering management responsibilities when necessary
  • Hires and leads managers and technical leaders; coaches and counsels team members, and determines and manages staffing strategy and plan, consistent with the needs of the team
  • Proactively seeks to create connections across the software engineering estate to facilitate conversations with their engineering teams
  • Facilitation of engineering education events such as roadshows, dojos, and innovations
  • Establishes and evangelizes a culture of continual learning across the engineering teams
  • Creates space for the principal engineers, alongside product teams, to innovate the technology landscape
  • Promotes the purpose of Core Engineering to participants internal and external to software engineering
  • Influences engineering managers to engage with the direction of core software engineering
  • Credibly referees in areas of technical differentiation to resolve and prevent conflict


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science/engineering or a related field
  • At least 15+ years of experience working in the Software Engineering domain with 5+ years in a leadership role
  • Hands-on experience in one or more of the digital platform domains – ESB, Messaging, API-led Integration, DevSecOps, Cloud PaaS, Application & Data Security, and End-To-End delivery chain automation
  • Proficient in Agile software delivery models (Kanban, Scrum, SAFe, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of leadership concepts, practices, and techniques, especially change management and leading culture change
  • Ability to promote and role model a team-oriented environment
  • Highly developed negotiation, facilitation, and consensus-building skills
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills

$172,000 - $225,000 a year

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
