Job Purpose

National Grid is hiring a Senior Counsel for our National Grid Ventures team.  This position can be located in Brooklyn, NY, Waltham, MA or Texas.

We are seeking an in-house attorney to work in the National Grid Ventures Legal Department and act as a lead attorney and business partner working alongside the senior management team. The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of relevant experience with excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Responsibilities include providing expert legal advice and guidance to clients regarding all aspects of project development, acquisition and disposition transactions, and a broad range of business matters in relation to our competitive business activities. Admission in good standing to the New York or Massachusetts bar is preferred. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide practical legal and business advice to Company personnel on commercial and corporate transactions, new business and investment opportunities, reporting, and compliance matters. Advise on a broad range of matters to advance the strategic and legal priorities of the Company.
  • Draft and negotiate commercial contracts with a broad range of counterparties including joint venture partners, project developers, vendors, and other business organizations. 
  • Understand and apply complex legal, market, political, and regulatory aspects of our business; utilize external peer group network to apply legal, market, and regulatory best practice within own area of specialization.
  • Exercise a complex level of legal judgment.
  • Identify significant corporate risks in business matters; work with assurance and business to develop appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Contribute to the Company’s development and improvement of contract templates. 
  • Support corporate governance efforts, including drafting minutes, operating agreements and consents, registering and maintaining entities, and drafting corporate policies and procedures. 
  • Aid in developing and implementing legal strategies, solutions, and preventative practices with mid- and long-term corporate impact related to compliance. 
  • Design and implement process improvements, including contract management and approval procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain current knowledge of industry trends in legal and compliance matters relating to the energy and innovative technology industries. Pursue ongoing professional development in order to maintain current knowledge on such best practices. 


Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. and Juris Doctor Degree
  • State bar membership (MA or NY preferred).
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience with preference for top-tier law firm and/or transferable in-house experience. Strong experience providing counsel in areas of corporate law, commercial contracts and corporate business transactions is required. Experience in energy project development and/or project finance is a plus.
  • Excellent commercial judgment along with strong written and oral communication skills.  
  • Ability to understand and communicate legal concepts and analysis to a range of constituents, including business and technical team members, executives, development partners, external counsel and others.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet competing deadlines, and work both independently and on teams. 
  • Adept contribution to business-oriented solutions on complex matters.
  • Experience in dealing with complex, high value matters and/or in the delivery of large-scale projects in the energy sector or another sector raising comparable regulatory issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of influencing stakeholders at senior levels and gaining support and commitment from a broad group.
  • Experience effectively managing relationships with team members and stakeholders while working collaboratively to deliver solutions.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to National Grid’s corporate values, including the advancement of inclusion and diversity principles.
