National Grid is hiring a Senior Analyst of Northeast Market Fundamentals. The role will be located in Waltham, MA.
The energy system will continue to change rapidly on the path to net zero carbon emissions. National Grid are at the heart of these changes, which pose strategic questions for us as a business and for the energy industry. The US market fundamentals team leads on helping the wider business understand the impacts of net-zero policy and the evolution of markets and technology on the energy system.
Within the US market fundamentals team, you will use electricity market modeling and problem-solving skills to support strategic decision making, enabling progress toward policy goals in the US northeast. You will become part of a high caliber, curious, motivated, inclusive team. You will get to work on exciting and challenging problems, and to analyze a range of potential growth opportunities related to offshore wind, energy storage, transmission, clean heat, hydrogen, and electrification that are central to the energy transition in the US northeast. The role also involves working closely with colleagues within the UK Market Fundamental team and the US/UK Strategy team to ensure a high quality and integrated approach to common issues and themes.
Conduct electricity system modeling and analysis to support investment decisions, business planning, strategic planning, & new business opportunities;
Contribute to continuous improvement of in-house electricity market models, and develop frameworks for incorporating model and database updates ensuring they are fit for purpose;
Support Group Strategy, M&A, Business Development, Corporate Affairs with ad hoc market analysis and assessments of market impacts
Contribute to the development of northeast electricity market and cross sector scenarios
Articulate & explain market model inputs/outputs to senior executives and other stakeholders using market analysis, modeling, & assessments of market impacts;
Track key regulatory changes within specific markets through research and attending conferences and meetings with external stakeholders.
Bachelor’s and/or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field (power system emphasis desired);
Experience with electricity modeling in an academic, consulting or corporate work environment.
1-3+ years of relevant work experience, depending on education, providing quantitative analysis, electricity market modeling, and/or consulting;
Advanced Excel and Python, VBA, SQL, or other programming skills; familiarity with Power BI or other data visualization / dashboard development packages a plus;
Knowledge of US power industry structures, policies, regulations & market fundamentals;
Familiarity with recent trends in conventional generation, renewables, gas, energy storage, transmission & distributed generation;
Understanding of transmission system and power flow fundamentals, including LMP formation;
Experience developing & employing market and/or financial models, as well as with commercial production cost and capacity expansion modeling software, such as: ProMOD, PLEXOS, Aurora, Gridview, GE MAPS, PSO/Enelytix, Dayzer, etc.;
Specific experience in NYISO, ISO-NE preferred.
