Job Purpose

The Major Permits Principal Specialist will be responsible for timely coordination of the permitting and licensing process for complex capital electric and gas projects in New England.
Engage, influence and maintain internal and external key stakeholder relationships that would support the state siting process to ensure that complex capital electric and gas projects meet their deadlines and avoid financial penalties.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provide coordination and oversight over the content of state siting applications for complex electric and gas projects; coordination authority over local permitting activities in New England, primarily in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
  • Work closely with project team members and consultants, including project managers, attorneys, engineers and environmental staff, to ensure that high-quality siting applications are filed in a timely manner and reflect National Grid policy objectives.    
  • Interact and influence regulatory staff and key internal and external stakeholders in the New England jurisdiction in support of the permitting and licensing requirements of electric and gas complex capital projects.
  • Explore opportunities to develop permitting efficiencies.
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative, integrity and ability to interact with company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.

Qualifications

  • This position requires driving.  A valid driver's license and a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver Policy are required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree related to environmental science, public policy, business, finance, law, government, economics or engineering. Advance degree in economics, environmental science, law, public policy, business (MBA) or engineering (Masters and/or Professional Engineering license) degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in energy or environmental regulation or permitting, preferably at the state or federal level
  •   Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to energy facility siting

      Experience conducting and influencing project filings at energy regulatory agencies

      Knowledge of energy regulatory agency processes

      Strong organizational skills

      Drive process improvements and change management

      Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills and the ability to write reports and develop presentations for internal and external senior leaders.
