National Grid touches millions of lives in the US Northeast (MA, NY & RI) and millions more in the UK with an energy network that stretches across the Atlantic. We’re an international team with principal offices in Los Gatos, California, Waltham, Massachusetts, Warwick UK and London UK. Feet forwards, head up, and eyes bright, we’re working hard to create value for people today – and shape the future of energy tomorrow.
In the US, we don’t generate or sell energy – we connect the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity and gas networks put power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.
The world of energy is changing beyond recognition. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of millions of people – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
National Grid is hiring an Innovation Manager for National Grid Partners. The position is based in our Waltham, MA office.
This role is specifically designed to strategize, ideate, setup, track and support the delivery of a disruptive innovation program across National Grid in the US, with a focus on our regulated organizations including Electricity transmission & distribution, Gas electricity transmission & distribution and Customer to name a few. This will include staying up to date with changes in the energy, technology and entrepreneurship landscapes, developing innovation strategies and initiatives to address our decarbonisation ambition and delivering on them. Your key stakeholders will be the US National Grid regulated businesses as well as the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
You will lead the development of new initiatives from the very beginning of problem identification, ideation and customer discovery through business model validation. The activities will be truly entrepreneurial ranging from strategic work at the early stage by generating a pipeline of projects, to customer validation and job-to-be-done interviews, to developing financial business propositions, novel technical solutions and compelling pitches to the investor and start-up community.
Innovation can be messy, so we are looking for entrepreneurial candidates, comfortable with being uncomfortable and working in a focused, sprint-like fashion. Ideal candidates are both comfortable working autonomously as well as in team settings. You also need to be passionate about the energy industry and innovation; open to all ideas, no matter how crazy they might seem, and capable of filtering and develop those which drive true value. To be successful in this role, you should be able to demonstrate how you can explain complex, novel ideas in a simple form to all levels within an organisation as well as venture capitalists.
Maintain a close watch on developments in technology & business models and their application within the context of climate change and the evolving global economic, political, research and energy environments.
Carry out blue sky thinking and develop an understanding of how macro trends impact innovation and technological evolution.
Ideate, develop and implement novel technology innovations and business models that drive value to National Grid.
Develop and maintain an innovation portfolio focusing on horizon 3 for the regulated business under National Grid US.
Engage with customers, employees and other stakeholders actively throughout the process conducting customer-discovery interviews and using a series of prototypes to learn, test and refine concepts.
Work with internal teams on proper handoff and operationalization of innovation initiatives.
Exhibit inspirational leadership, commercial, entrepreneurial, problem solving and creative skills.
Good understanding of the US energy ecosystem.
Strong understanding of and experience in innovation best practices
Passionate about creating an exceptional customer experience
Proven record in practicing flexibility, opportunism, and adaptability
Experience in building strong working relationships across a diverse stakeholder base.
Experience and clear understanding of US energy trends.
