Job Purpose

Reporting directly to the US CIO, partner with the CIO in providing technology vision and direction for the enterprise driving focus and prioritisation within the IT organisation through establishing strategic planning and governance principles and processes.

  • Accountable for the development, review and tracking of strategic and operational business plans for the IT organization.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of the performance management frameworks and metrics to ensure the IT organization delivers value to the US business.
  • Establishes and implements continuous-improvement programs for the IT organization including ensuring that the IT function “doing the right thing” including operating model development and performance management..
  • Stakeholder engagement- Greater leadership buy-in for Strategic Programs/Initiatives and therefore greater chance of project succeeding and getting support when needed. Drives and facilitates effective collaboration and communications between the IT organization and the user and customer communities.
  • May regularly review IT costs and cost structures for IT services and products so that the financial implications of IT projects and activities are communicated to the proper IT and business executives
  • Establish governance to review US Programs and Projects across US IT including BP’s and Delivery centers (GSD, DR&S, I&O etc). Set standards and governance (SPI, CPI & EV)  to increase deliverability over 85%.Better utilization of PM resources by establishing best practices, methodologies etc.
  • As a member of the Senior IT Leadership Team, you will play a key role in the transformation of IT to meet the current and future needs of National Grid.  Within a matrixed organization, you will want to actively contributes to the leadership, strategy setting and overall operation and performance of IT in the US.
Key Accountabilities

•    Lead the development of the $1.5B three-year strategic IT business plan, ensuring the translation and tracking of the Group and US IT Strategies into overall plans articulating clear targets, objectives and outcomes. Captures and tracks Business Benefits and value management.

•    Accountable for the strategic alignment of the $360M CAPEX per annum IT Investment Plan across the US business entities as well as the support functions in the US (including IT for IT).  Articulate consolidated investment requirements based on strategic drivers including the formal risk assessment of system health and alignment with US regulatory commitments.

•    Accountable for the cost-effective planning of the $211M annual IT Opex plan - proactively exploring opportunities for IT to become more efficient for our users by delivering and tracking multi-million-pound cost saving initiatives and support the IT Business Partners to manage consumption

•    To manage the development of the annual IT Operating and Production Plan, setting out specific deliverables, targets and accountabilities for the year ahead in accordance with the Strategic Business Plan whilst coordinating with Delivery Centres to ensure resource optimization and availability. Better visibility of initiatives and alignment with Delivery centers.

•    Manage the operation of the IT Portfolio Calibration / Investment governance processes to deliver against the annual operating plan ensuring consistent prioritisation, quality of sanctioning process, investment papers / decision making and benefit tracking.

•    Establish cross functional governance for various US initiatives such as Accelerate for efficiency tracking, governance of BMS standards across US IT and business and other process improvement initiatives. 

•    Develop, and evolve, the US IT Balanced Scorecard and IT Cadence metrics against the annual operating managing the overall tracking and reporting of US IT performance against commitments and targets.

•    Lead the Planning and Performance team, ensuring proper skills and people development with appropriate levels of support across all planning and performance activities and functions.

•    Oversee the performance of the US IT organization against defined process performance targets, and ensure that there are proper communication and continuous improvement efforts in place as necessary

•    Ensure IT support for regulatory submissions and alignment of IT Business Plans to Regulatory frameworks to optimize recovery of investments.

•    Ensure governance and compliance for all IT and Business Audits that require IT assistance.

•    Enterprise Program Assurance- Risk Management for cross functional program risk identification, mitigation plan and structured risk resolution by leveraging IMS(Integrated Master Schedule) and other risk registers.

•    May assume full CIO responsibilities (or those responsibilities as directed) during the CIO's absence.

•    Stays current with developments in new market trends and innovations in technology and the leadership of enterprise IT.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Has good leadership, relationship, communication and presentation skills.
  • Has the ability to influence and manage senior stakeholders – e.g. program sponsors.
  • Demonstrate the Valued Business Partner capabilities and behaviours in all interactions with IS Colleagues, vendors and business stakeholders.


Successful candidates will:

•    Be a passionate and visionary technologist able to inspire others to challenge and disrupt the current reality and most importantly of all, able to take people along with you.
•    Possess previous IT leadership experience commensurate with this significant and high-profile role gained at highly respected organizations and having successfully developed and executed strategic business plans in, desirably, a regulated environment
•    Demonstrate significant experience in the development of effective business focused IT metrics and IT value measurement
•    Present with gravitas and credibility to build strong relationships, and collaborate, with a wide variety of internal stakeholders and maintain an expert external network
•    Demonstrate significant EQ skills to work with others in a matrix environment to achieve technology results interfacing across global delivery centres and in the wider business at all levels
•    Be an inspirational leader, able to excite and develop internal and external ecosystem teams to deliver high performance
•    Previously have led IT strategic and operational planning development and execution as part of an overall technology-enabled business strategy
•    Possess strong business, commercial and financial acumen ideally having managed large multi-million dollars IT budgets
•    Have developed highly tuned organizational change management skills and able to successfully lead existing IT organizations through transformation with courage and sensitivity
•    Be able to communicate and co-ordinate multiple tasks simultaneously in a complex and dynamic organization, ensuring an effective balance between internally and externally facing activities 
•    Demonstrate technical credibility and independent judgment and decision-making responsibilities
•    Be able to demonstrate how to maximize the value of a vendor/partner ecosystem and establish effective governance
•    Strong relationship management and facilitation skills

Key Attributes:

•    Master’s Degree in Computer Science/related field, or equivalent industry experience
•    Extensive IT experience and deep technical knowledge
•    MBA desirable
