Our Gridtern Program allows current college students to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on June 5th 2023 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, and opportunities to get involved in your community and have fun!

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2023:

ADMS Engineering (Northborough, MA)

Our ADMS Engineering team develops and manages the real-time electric distribution load flow product for our Massachusetts and New York service territories. The team uses Power System Explorer (PSE) to predict voltage and current in complex situations (e.g. with renewable generation) which will become the norm in our clean energy future. For the summer you will conduct such tasks as running load flow analysis for testing or planning the system. You will also perform necessary data analytics.

Distribution Asset Management and Engineering (Northborough, MA)

Our Distribution Asset Management & Engineering team is responsible for the engineering and development of electric standards and work methods. The team also works to develop Grid Modernization solutions. For the summer you will work on distribution planning projects, program various equipment, develop relay settings, in addition to other projects.

Distribution Electric Control Center (Northborough, MA)

Our Distribution Electric Control Center team is responsible for ensuring the safe monitoring and operation of our Electric Distribution system for all voltages below 46 Kv. All maintenance, repairs, and outage restoration efforts are all routed through the control room where operators analyze each issue and provide direction to field resources on next steps. For the summer you will be working within a team to analyze system problems and coordinate/direct resources to these problems. *This position would offer 12-hour work days*

HVDC & STATCOM - NE Electric (Ayer “Sandy Pond”, MA)

Our HVDC & STATCOM - NE Electric team oversees our New England Hydro-transmission 2GW interconnector. The team operates, maintains, and performs cybersecurity and engineering functions to support day to day reliability. For the summer you will assist the team in obtaining and maintaining maintenance/operations stats which will improve site corrective actions and preventative maintenance. 

Protection Engineering, NE (Northborough, MA)

Our Protection Engineering team provides the rest of the company with technical expertise and support from an engineering perspective to ensure effective operations. This includes conducting coordination studies, fault studies, relay settings, and protection reviews and repair. For the summer you will perform relay protection coordination and short circuit engineering studies. You will also help evaluate and design protective systems for the company’s substations.

Security – SOAR (Northborough, MA)

Our SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response) team is responsible for logging and monitoring across the company in addition to overseeing the Security team’s automation capability. The team takes logs from thousands of assets and utilizes advanced detection technologies to identify malicious or suspicious behavior. For the summer you will be paired with a SOAR engineer who will be there to guide you throughout the summer and assist with the projects that you will be overseeing. Projects and day to day work will be discussed during the interview.

Substation Engineering and Design (Northborough, MA)

Our Substation Engineering and Design team provides engineering services related to the development of new electric substation, expansion and modifications to existing substations and engineering support to field personnel in relation to electrical substation equipment. For the summer you will perform preliminary engineering evaluations, assist in development of project scope and schedule to support business strategy and capital investments. You will also work with the team to support construction and various project closeout activities.

T&D Grid Modernization New England (Northborough, MA)

Our T&D Grid Modernization New England team provides support to various departments within the company as it relates to the modernization of design and operation of our electric transmission & distribution system. Support provided by the team is technology review and selection; defining project budget, scope, and timeline; internal and external reporting and tracking; and stakeholder engagement. For the summer you will work alongside other team members to over see the delivery and management of our Substation Online Monitoring, Advanced Feeder Monitoring, Vot-Var Optimization, Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration efforts.

Transmission Control Center (Northborough, MA)

The Transmission Control Center Team monitors and operates the high-voltage electric transmission system in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with all internal and external requirements, standards, and procedures. For the summer you will work alongside the team to support daily operational tasks such as the Energy Management System Update Project and different regulatory reporting.

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 5, 2023
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2023 Semester
  • Pursuing an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Engineering, Electric Power Technology, Energy Management, Computer Science, IT, Cyber Security, Data Analytics, Data Science, or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$20.00 - $25.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$31.00 - $32.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year.
