Our Gridtern Program allows current college students to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on June 5th 2023 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, and opportunities to get involved in your community and have fun!

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2023:

Complex Customer Project Development - Electric (Syracuse, NY)

Our Complex Customer Project Development – Electric team is responsible for the planning, delivery, management, and governance of larger electric customer projects per customer requirements and timelines. For the summer you will ensure our electric customer projects adhere with the Network Development process by assisting in design requirements, milestones, and detailed cost estimate.

Control & Integration (Syracuse, NY)

Our Control & Integration team supports the Substation and Transmission departments with capital project engineering and design assistance. The team engineers SCADA solutions and network designs for our substation devices to communicate with our transmission and regional control centers. For the summer you will be completing SCADA points and network diagrams, while learning how to program and configure HMI screens for Win10 alarming systems.

Distribution Control and Integration (Syracuse, NY)

The Distribution Control and Integration team is at the forefront of technology development and focuses on smart technology to allow our System Control Centers the ability to monitor and control the grid safely and efficiently. For the summer your focus will be developing Distributed Network Protocol applications in a Smart Meter. You will also assist your team members on the programming of data concentrators and various database management tasks.

Distribution Design (Syracuse, NY)

Our Distribution Design team is responsible for delivering complete work packages to our field teams for all construction projects. These packages typically include detailed designs, permits, easements and anything else required to allow us to provide service to our customers and maintain our infrastructure for continued reliability. For the summer you will support the team in reviewing electric designs for accuracy and coordinating work assignments. You will also spend about half your time job shadowing design representatives and/or the field operations crew to learn more about the different team functions and responsibilities.

Distribution Planning and Asset Management (Syracuse, NY)

Our Distribution Planning and Asset Management team strives to maintain reliable, sustainable, and affordable electric system for our customers. The team works to identify modifications to distribution line and station facilities that will enhance the resiliency of the system and to modernize the grid to meet forecasted capacity requirements and minimizes environmental concerns. For the summer you will work alongside your team to oversee the documentation and development of asset inventory, risk signature, maintenance strategies, data retrieval methods, financial forecasts, tactical and work plans.

Electric Meter Engineering (Syracuse, NY)

Our Electric Meter Engineering team provides engineering expertise and support for capital and O&M project work. The team develops short and long-term asset strategies and ensure effective operations and safe designs of all meter assets. For the summer you will support the early deployment of our AMI metering technology and support Smart Home tours that are offered to employees. 

NY Project Controls (Syracuse, NY)

Our NY Project Controls team manages and maintains the schedules for NY Electric Complex Capital project. The team performs schedule health checks throughout the life of the project and compares schedule milestones against forecast information to assess the true status of the project. For the summer you will assist in scheduled health checks and aiding in the development of reports to support the validation process.

NY Substation O&M Services (Syracuse, NY)

Our NY Substation O&M Services team provides substation electrical equipment technical expertise and support to various departments within National grid to maintain, improve reliability, and deliver long term sustainability of substation assets. For the summer you will assist with department projects that may include standard & procedures updates, test records management, creating job aids for field workers and for transformer thermal ratings.

Program Management - NY Electric Substations & Transmission (Syracuse, NY)

Our Program Management - NY Electric Substations & Transmission team is responsible for delivering Non-Complex Programs and specific projects within our Substations and Transmission Line portfolio. For the summer you will work with key stakeholders to enable the cost-effective planning and delivery of Electric Transmission and Substations programs and projects in Upstate New York. You will also assist in scheduling, forecasting, and project management of 1-2 programs or specific projects. 

Protection Engineering (Syracuse, NY)

Our Protection Engineering team is responsible for designing control schemes that provide protection to the transmission system against fault conditions (short circuits on various equipment such as lines, transformers, and other substation elements). For the summer you will be responsible for updating relay setting databases to ensure our information is up to date. You will also work alongside members of the department in supporting other various team projects.

Substation Engineering & Design (Syracuse, NY)

Our Substation Engineering and Design team provides engineering services related to the development of new electric substation, expansion and modifications to existing substations and engineering support to field personnel in relation to electrical substation equipment. For the summer you will perform preliminary engineering evaluations, assist in development of project scope and schedule, to support business strategy and capital investments. You will also work with the team to support construction and various project closeout activities.

T&D Line Engineering and Standards (Syracuse, NY)

Our T&D Line Engineering and Standards team is responsible for establishing electric construction standards that will result in innovative, effective, and efficient systems for our company’s electric transmission, distribution, and streetlight teams. For the summer, you will help ensure our compliance with existing industry requirements by working alongside team engineers to support standard design, drawings, material, and equipment specifications.

Telecom Engineering (Syracuse, NY)

Our Telecom Engineering team is responsible for engineering design, implementation, integration, and troubleshooting support for our telecommunications and data network systems. For the summer you will provide project support to the other engineers on the team and help establish new engineering procedures.

Transmission Planning - NY (Syracuse, NY)

Our Transmission Planning team is responsible for determining what capacity and voltage support projects are needed to keep our transmission system loading and voltages within required criteria. The team also works directly with New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) for any interconnection projects that are happening. For the summer you will work with the team to complete thermal ratings and renewable energy interconnection projects.  

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 5, 2023
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2023 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Engineering or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$19.00 - $23.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$29.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year.
