What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
My role includes designing transmission lines and providing construction support. We are usually involved with the project from the initiation phase to closeout. I like that I get to design the project, see it getting built and then energized to serve the customers.

As a mother of two toddlers, working at National Grid helps me achieve a work/life balance. In addition, National Grid is continuously looking to provide support to its employees to manage their work/life commitments for example the Caregiver Program that was recently rolled out.

Why did you choose National Grid?
I started my career in civil engineering working for a Structural Engineering firm. The projects I worked on were very similar which was tedious. Here at National Grid, projects are very diverse, every project (from a single structure replacement to a circuit rebuild) has it is own challenges and requirements which make every project unique and interesting.

What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
In my role, the results of my work are quite tangible. After working on technical reports and construction drawings, it is extremely rewarding to see projects in construction and implemented throughout the state. This is very rare for electrical engineers, and in the power industry you get to witness your efforts become reality.

How would you define National Grid's culture?
National Grid supports diversity and an open culture. Engineers have a variety of resources and tools available to support their projects.

What do you like about working at National Grid?
The people and the culture at National Grid make it a great place to work. There is a lot of knowledge and experience here that needs to be imparted on younger engineers from those who have spent their careers in the power industry and are preparing to retire.

Why did you choose National Grid?
I chose to work at National Grid because of the varied opportunities offered. There is significant potential to learn a lot in a short period of time. National Grid also has numerous programs to support ongoing education, with certificate programs and engineering licenses.

What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
As a Massachusetts planning engineer, I am responsible for developing projects that address electrical system issues such as capacity, reliability and asset condition issues. My role is extremely rewarding because these projects allow National Grid to provide safe and reliable electric service to our customers. My team also assists operations in restoration efforts during storm events, and I find it especially rewarding to know that I play a part in restoring power to our customers.

How would you define National Grid's culture?
National Grid’s culture makes it an amazing place to work. Our company is inclusive and collaborative with a strong safety and customer focus.

What do you like about working at National Grid?
One of the biggest reasons I love working at National Grid is that I am continuously learning, sometimes about responsibilities of other departments in the company and sometimes about doing things differently with new innovative technology. There are always people willing and excited to share knowledge about what they do, and it helps develop better ways of working.

Why did you choose National Grid?
I chose National Grid for two main reasons. First, I was drawn to the company when I saw the collaborative culture during my interview and heard about all the different opportunities inside the company. Second, I was offered a position in the Graduate Development Program (GDP) which provides additional professional development opportunities and builds a network for graduates as they transition into the professional world. I was excited to get the opportunity to rotate around the company with peers before starting our full time positions, and the GDP was ultimately what made me choose National Grid.

What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
My role consists of creating electric distribution infrastructure projects. Due to the nature of my position, projects that I create tend to have an immediate and decades long positive impact on the community when they are built.

How would you define National Grid's culture?
I feel that our culture derives from the company’s clear and inspiring mission, vision, and values statement. Job Purpose

National Grid Engineering Pipeline Program

Does learning about the engineering field interest you as you’re trying to decide on a college major?

National Grid's Engineering Pipeline Program (EPP) offers high school students the chance to learn more about National Grid and the engineering profession as a whole through a structured six-year program.  It's a chance to translate your interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics into a future career of your choice.  

As a Scholar in the Engineering Pipeline Program, you will be given the opportunity to gain exposure to the engineering industry through instruction, in and out of the classroom, site visits, research and projects. Highlights include interacting with real life engineers as mentors, networking with fellow program participants, participating in job shadowing to experience a “day in the life of,” and opportunities for paid internships.  The end result could be a career with National Grid once you graduate from college. 

During the first two years, EPP Scholars take part in two half-week summer programs, which include classroom and hands-on activities on the following topics: introduction to the energy industry, natural gas operations, electric power systems, the future of energy, gas engineering, electric engineering, sustainable energy, along with panel discussions with National Grid engineers regarding their education, interests and career.

For 2019, the Year 1 “Intro to Engineering Academy” will occur from Monday, July 15 – Wednesday July 17 at National Grid’s Learning Center, 25 Hub Drive, Melville, NY 11747.

Qualifications

If you are interested in enrolling in the Engineering Pipeline program, we encourage you to have a discussion with your guidance counselor and parents prior to completing the online application.  Please keep in mind the application must be submitted by the April 26th deadline.  Applicants must:

  • Have an interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics
  • Currently be enrolled in their junior year of high school
  • Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 87 out of 100

Once accepted into the program, students must pursue an engineering degree, maintain a 3.0 GPA in college, and participate in ongoing Engineering Pipeline Program activities to be considered for future employment with National Grid.
