What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
My role includes designing transmission lines and providing construction support. We are usually involved with the project from the initiation phase to closeout. I like that I get to design the project, see it getting built and then energized to serve the customers.

How would you define National Grid's culture?
National Grid culture is centered about safety, customers and workers. National Grid goal is to ensure the public and its workers are safe and continuously emphasize the importance of coming home safe to our family every night. Here at National Grid we aim to exceed customers’ expectations and deliver energy in the most cost efficient and environmentally friendly ways.

What do you like about working at National Grid?
As a mother of two toddlers, working at National Grid helps me achieve a work/life balance. I believe National Grid understands the benefits and importance of the work/life balance and encourages its employees to take advantage of the benefits the company offers. In addition, National Grid is continuously looking to provide support to its employees to manage their work/life commitments for example the Caregiver Program that was recently rolled out.

Why did you choose National Grid?
I started my career in civil engineering working for a Structural Engineering firm. The projects I worked on were very similar which was tedious. Here at National Grid, projects are very diverse, every project (from a single structure replacement to a circuit rebuild) has it is own challenges and requirements which make every project unique and interesting.

What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
In my role, the results of my work are quite tangible. After working on technical reports and construction drawings, it is extremely rewarding to see projects in construction and implemented throughout the state. This is very rare for electrical engineers, and in the power industry you get to witness your efforts become reality.

How would you define National Grid's culture?
National Grid supports diversity and an open culture. Engineers have a variety of resources and tools available to support their projects.

What do you like about working at National Grid?
The people and the culture at National Grid make it a great place to work. There is a lot of knowledge and experience here that needs to be imparted on younger engineers from those who have spent their careers in the power industry and are preparing to retire.

I chose to work at National Grid because of the varied opportunities offered. There is significant potential to learn a lot in a short period of time. National Grid also has numerous programs to support ongoing education, with certificate programs and engineering licenses.

What do you find most rewarding about your role at National Grid?
As a Massachusetts planning engineer, I am responsible for developing projects that address electrical system issues such as capacity, reliability and asset condition issues. My role is extremely rewarding because these projects allow National Grid to provide safe and reliable electric service to our customers. My team also assists operations in restoration efforts during storm events, and I find it especially rewarding to know that I play a part in restoring power to our customers.

How would you define National Grid's culture?
National Grid’s culture makes it an amazing place to work. Our company is inclusive and collaborative with a strong safety and customer focus.

What do you like about working at National Grid?
One of the biggest reasons I love working at National Grid is that I am continuously learning, sometimes about responsibilities of other departments in the company and sometimes about doing things differently with new innovative technology. There are always people willing and excited to share knowledge about what they do, and it helps develop better ways of working.

Why did you choose National Grid?
I chose National Grid for two main reasons. First, I was drawn to the company when I saw the collaborative culture during my interview and heard about all the different opportunities inside the company. Second, I was offered a position in the Graduate Development Program (GDP) which provides additional professional development opportunities and builds a network for graduates as they transition into the professional world. I was excited to get the opportunity to rotate around the company with peers before starting our full time positions, and the GDP was ultimately what made me choose National Grid.

My role consists of creating electric distribution infrastructure projects. Due to the nature of my position, projects that I create tend to have an immediate and decades long positive impact on the community when they are built.

National Grid is hiring a Lead Process Improvement Engineer for our Gas Organization in Holtsville, NY. 

Job Purpose

The Lead Process Safety Engineer (under the direction of the Manager of Compliance & Training) will work within the Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Operations Compliance & Training Group enterprise wide in three states with twelve (12) LNG plants to ensure high levels of regulatory and company policy compliance through use of internal audits/inspections, risk analysis, and standardization across the enterprise.  This role will also prepare reports for departmental management, train plant personnel on procedural changes and updates and oversee compliance within the PAS 55 protocol

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop and implement technical specifications and processes to support continuous improvement efforts and ensure code compliance and safety standards when a gap in processes is discovered
  • Develop and implement the technical characteristics of new programs that enhance plant safety reliability and operational efficiency
  • Develop plant technical specifications to meet Federal and State codes and industry standards
  • Perform or lead technical assignments to evaluate process improvements
  • Chair the annual review of the Capital Improvement Plan and Corporate Safety Risk Assessment. Update the plan which is supplied to the upper level executives
  • Assist plant management with operational / mechanical problems, plant supervision and portable pipeline operations
  • Ability to recognize each type (anchor, sliding, variable support spring constant support spring etc.) of pipe support used on LNG pipelines
  • Perform field inspections of LNG piping and pipe supports during actual cool down process to verify adequate thermal contraction of piping system
  • Ability to detect overstress conditions in LNG piping and pipe supports that may be due to changes that may have occurred in the LNG piping or plant components in those systems
  • Able to oversee and check consultant’s work such as pipe stress analysis, performed for the U.S. LNG Plants
  • Provide technical support to Corporate Safety personnel as need to ensure compliance with Corporate Safety’s requirements in such areas as KPIs, PHA’s, etc
  • Review LNG Operations Abnormal Condition (AOC) Reports, ensuring that any changes made to plant meet all applicable codes and sound engineering practice. Prepare Advisory Bulletins and update quarterly AOC status. Track any negative trends and develop a program to mitigate them
  • Update and maintain an abnormal operations database to identify trends and corrective actions
  • Assist plant management with performing Root Cause Analysis of any failed plant components
  • Extract pertinent criteria from complex documents (i.e.) Corporate Welding Policy or ISA’s SIL documents and provide plant management with items specific to the U.S. LNG plants
  • Provide updates to plant management on incidents such as the San Bruno pipeline incident, the Texas City refinery incident or the Alpha pipa oil platform
  • Represent the department at U.S. Welding and NDE Process Team meetings or any other corporate area needing LNG Operations subject matter expert input

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline is required and 7+ years experience in LNG Plant Operations & Maintenance
  • Professional Engineer’s license is preferred
  • Detailed knowledge/understanding of legislative/regulatory issues affecting the industry including knowledge of Federal DOT CFR 193, FERC, NFPA 59A, State LNG code and NY Fire Department LNG code and Industry Standards. Demonstrated ability to anticipate obstacles and think ahead about next steps
  • Strong experience in Microsoft Office 365, Visio. etc
  • Good project leadership ability and excellent communication skills
  • Willingness to travel throughout the U.S. company territory
  • Valid drivers license
