Job Purpose

To support the Risk and Insurance team in identifying insurable risks and managing them through the cost-effective provision of insurance solutions for National Grid.

To liaise with the businesses and provide insurance and risk management advice; lead on specific lines of insurance cover and provide support to the rest of the team on other policies.

Candidate serves as the functional partner to the Business and provides support to said Business (i.e. electric distribution companies, gas distribution companies, electric transmission companies, National Grid Ventures, Finance, HR, Procurement, Legal, Regulation and Pricing). Candidate supports global insurance programs in developing strategy and data collection of material matters and exposures.

Role reports to Director US Risk and Insurance and maintains partnerships with the Global Risk and Insurance Team.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support senior members of the team, and in some cases lead, in the assessment, review and recommendation of insurance requirements for designated businesses and projects across National Grid; and implement the approved insurance strategy to ensure appropriate protection of National Grid’s assets and insurable liabilities.
  • Communicate the group insurance strategy to designated businesses and generally across National Grid.
  • Coordinate US surety bond program, including issuance of bonds, monitoring outstanding bonds, and payment of broker invoices.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of insurance market influences on designated lines of insurance coverage to ensure National Grid benefits or is protected from any market developments.
  • Advise Business in the context of entering into commercial contracts on issues related to risk and insurance.
  • Responsible for collating, analyzing and presenting accurate data to support underwriting information provided to insurance markets to ensure full disclosure of all material matters to insurance markets.
  • Responsible for collating, analyzing and presenting accurate data to support Rate Case submissions to regulators.
  • Coordinate budgeting process and vendor payments.
  • Responsible for establishing best practices in the US Risk and Insurance group while challenging peers and maintaining key relationships. 

Qualifications Required:

  • Knowledge of usual lines of insurance coverage purchased by a corporation the size of National Grid ,with a detailed understanding of these lines of coverage.
  • Experience in leading and placing insurance policies in the US or global insurance markets.
  • Communicating group insurance strategy to key stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management & Insurance, Business, Finance or equivalent.
  • ARM/CPCU qualified or in progression.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience within the insurance and risk management profession gained from in-house positions, insurance underwriting or brokerage experience.
  • Experience in leading and placing insurance programs, including Renewables, in the US or global insurance markets.
  • Experience in reviewing and negotiating insurance terms and conditions including policy wording reviews.
  • Excellent written / oral communications skills and follow-up.
