Our Gridtern Program allows current college students to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on June 5th 2023 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, and opportunities to get involved in your community and have fun!

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2023:

Distribution Planning & Asset Management - NY East (Albany, NY)

Our Distribution Planning and Asset Management team strives to maintain reliable, sustainable, and affordable electric system for our customers. The team works to identify modifications to distribution line and station facilities that will enhance the resiliency of the system and to modernize the grid to meet forecasted capacity requirements and minimizes environmental concerns. For the summer you will work alongside your teammates to help identify opportunities to improve reliability, increase capacity, and address asset condition issues.

Electric Distribution Design (Albany, NY)

The Electric Distribution Design team oversees the work packages to our various construction field employees. These packages are a requirement to maintain our infrastructure and provide service to our customers, that include detailed designs, permits, and easements. For the summer you will be working with Design Supervisors to ensure the packages are being completed and project schedules are being monitored throughout the construction process.

Electric Strategy Execution (Albany, NY)

Our Electric Strategy Execution team is responsible for facilitating new initiatives within our New York electric engineering organization and driving solutions to meet company goals as we adapt to changing technologies. For the summer you will develop, communicate, and steer implementation plan(s) for the Company’s grid modernization efforts within our New York service territory.

GFO UNY East (Albany, NY)

Our Gas Field Operations team oversees the maintenance and construction of our distribution gas pipelines. For the summer, you will visit different National Grid work sites and learn from subject matter experts as they oversee different projects relating to compliance, safety regulations, and requirements.

Government Relations (Albany, NY)

Our Government Relations team interfaces and builds relationships with the state's legislative, executive branches, and other key stakeholders to promote the company's vision and priorities. For the summer you will work with the team to draft communications with lawmakers/stakeholders, organize and input data related to legislation and policies, as well as attend different community events.

NY Programs (Albany, NY)

Our NY Programs team oversees many different New York Public Service Commission mandated programs. These programs include Damage Prevention, Inside Inspection, Leak Survey, and Storm Hardening. For the summer you will assist the team with data analysis, drafting internal and external communications, engaging with different stakeholders, in addition to other project work. 

NY Support Processing (Albany, NY)

Our NY Support Processing - Customer Organization team provides administrative and project management support services for the company’s Commercial and Industrial electric and gas energy efficiency, demand reduction and climate change initiatives. For the summer you will assist in automating program reporting with updated technology, simplifying, and updating current data management practices, when it comes to generating, storing, and communicating data.

Right of Way (Albany, NY)

Our Right of Way team works to obtain and manage property rights for the company so we can maintain and operate our gas and electric networks. For the summer you will work with the team to enter property rights information into a geographic information system.

UNY GFO Restoration (Albany, NY)

Our Upstate New York GFO Restoration team manages the paving and landscaping restoration responsibilities for our company’s Gas and Electric operations. The team will monitor our contracted workforce progress, coordinate efforts with different stakeholders and work closely with customer to reconcile their requests against the company’s obligations. For the summer you will oversee our contracted workforce’s progress as they complete these projects and provide detailed reporting to senior management on the work plan progress. You will also be responsible for updating internal Work Management Systems to ensure all data is up to date.

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 5, 2023
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2023 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Business, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$16.00 - $23.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$24.00 - $29.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year.
