Manager, Federal Government Relations

About the Position:

To manage, maintain and grow National Grid’s external relationships to advance the company’s legislative priorities and positions on key issues, including but not limited to: cyber and general security, LIHEAP, workforce development and immigration, pipeline safety, and general infrastructure issues.  This role will also assist with the development of company public policy positions on key issues and identifying strategic opportunities for the company at the legislative and/or regulatory level.  The position will specifically be responsible for the New York federal delegation, while supporting the Massachusetts and Rhode Island delegations on aforementioned key issues.  As part of the Federal Government Relations team, the position is expected to work on other issues as necessary, and fulfill duties as required.  Position will require frequent interaction with senior executives and/or high level leaders, both internally and externally.  The position is based in Washington, DC, and will require period travel.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
  • Identify and work with key stakeholders both internally and externally to evaluate policy in order to determine probable impact on National Grid. Work proactively to develop legislative initiatives when appropriate;
  • Develop and manage emerging policies in order to ensure they are in line with strategic business objectives;
  • Develop and manage ongoing relationships with key stakeholders, including Congressional offices and Members of Congress;
  • Work with relevant coalitions and trade associations to further the company’s energy policy agenda;
  • Manage short term and long term deliverables;
  • Act as communications liaison to Corporate Affairs from Washington, DC, office;
  • Support company’s overall strategic political activities, including PAC management.


Knowledge & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in political science, economics, environmental sciences, business, engineering or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus;
  • Minimum of six years’ experience within government affairs, public policy, communications, strategic planning or related fields. Energy or utility, business and/or related government experience a plus;
  • Expertise in energy and environmental issues and public policy development; detailed knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory issues affecting the industry;
  • Strong understanding of legislative process.  Experience analyzing policy proposals, legislation, and/or federal regulation and conveying findings;
  • Ability to apply and modify complex theories and learned concepts appropriately;
  • Experience working within and providing leadership to coalitions and engaging a diverse set of partners;Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
